The Palmetto Opera presents Tosca by Giacomo Puccini at the Koger Center for the Arts
On Sunday, January 26, 2025 at 3:00 pm, The Palmetto Opera will bring their full-scale production of the grand opera Tosca to the Koger Center for the Arts featuring Teatro Lirico d'Europa and an internationally renowned cast. You are also invited to an elegant “Meet the Cast” reception immediately following the performance in The Gallery.
Tosca is set in Rome in June 1800, when Rome is threatened by Napoleon's invasion of Italy. It is a tragic and political love story and explores how love overcomes all. Mario Cavaradossi, a painter, is deeply in love with Floria Tosca, a famous singer. Scarpia, the chief of police, has arrested Cavaradossi and proposes a deal to Tosca that if she gives herself to him, he will free her lover.
This story has it all - love, lust, murder, and political intrigue – and with Puccini’s richly romantic score, it is one of the world’s most loved operas. Tosca will be performed in the original Italian with English super titles projected above the stage.

Making Opera Part of South Carolina
The Palmetto Opera, founded in 2001, is now in its fourteenth season of full opera productions. It incorporates Midlands-area opera professionals and students in its opera productions, and concerts. Monthly Opera Thursday performances are performed the first two Thursdays of every month and feature local and regional opera singers. Performances are at Villa Tronco restaurant in Columbia and other venues throughout the year. The Palmetto Opera’s educational program, Opera is Awesome, for high schools and colleges gives students an introduction to the world of opera and the experience of live grand opera.
Columbia had not had a professional opera season in over 28 years when The Palmetto Opera produced its first grand opera, Madama Butterfly, in 2011. People from over 60 zip codes outside of Columbia attended the return production of Madama Butterfly in January 2023 at the Koger Center for the Arts.
The Palmetto Opera is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit arts organization.
